Die primitive Erscheinung solcher Winterimpressionen, wie sie jenes Tape bereithält, ist immer wieder berührend, dieses Raue und Jungfräuliche. Allerdings liegt der Fokus eines Rezensenten nicht auf dem visuellen Moment, sondern auf jenem des Klanglichen.
Mit unabdingbarer Deutlichkeit schlägt Alcests erster Ertrag in die Gefilde einer rohen Gesamtausrichtung, und lässt dabei keinerlei Zweifel aufkommen an der gewählten Titulierung. Denn fürwahr entschleiert sich hier das karge Grau einer „Tristesse Hivernale“, einer winterlichen Trauer, offenlegt ausnehmend kalte und von melancholischer Drastik durchdrungene Rifffolgen die nur wenig Raum bieten für Kontemplatives.
Jedoch erweisen sich die tatsächlich vorhandenen Passagen derartiger, ruhiger Augenblicke mit dem Verstreichen der vier Kompositionen als äußerst bedeutsam, erwirken sie doch eine Gliederung zweier hier anzutreffender Gesichtspunkte, nämlich den vorrangig impulsiven und klar dominanten Charakter einerseits und die seltener auftretende, jedoch umso eindrücklichere Schwermut akustischer Natur andererseits, welche hier ganz dezent die Emotion tiefer Einsamkeit erwachsen lässt.
Durchweg also projiziert „Tristesse Hivernale“ entschieden gramvolle Reflektionen auf den Hörer und erzwingt aufgrund der hohen Authentizität und Reife der Stücke eine ausgeprägte Eigenemotionalität bei demselben. Da ist es doch ein wenig bedauerlich, dass man sich seitens Alcest dermaßen schnell abwandte von jenen Pfaden.

The primitive appearance of such impressions of winter, like yon tape comes up with, again and again is touching, so rough and virgin. However, the focus of a reviewer is not the visual aspect, but the one associated with the sound.
With indispensable explicitness Alcest’s first earning strikes into the fields of a raw overall direction, and, thereby, lets arouse no doubts about the chosen title. Since, forsooth, here the desolate grey of a “Tristesse Hivernale”, a wintry sadness unveils, reveals exquisitely cold riff-orders pervaded by melancholic rigorousness, which offers only few space for contemplative elements.
Though, with the elapsing of the four compositions the actually existing passages of suchlike, calm moments proof to be absolutely meaningful, since they effect a classification of two aspects met here, namely, the preferably impulsive and clearly dominant character on the one hand and, on the other hand, the more rarely emerging, but the more impressive megrim of the acoustic sort, which very discretely makes the emotion of deepest loneliness growing.
So, throughout “Tristesse Hivernale” projects decisively griefful reflections on the listener and by reason of the high authenticity and maturity of the pieces enforces a distinctive self-emotionality within one’s mind and soul. Facing that, it’s a bit pitiable that Alcest turned their back toward this paths suchlike quickly.
