Review: German Version

Der eine kann’s kaum erwarten, der andere will’s schon nicht mehr hören und dem dritten ist es völlig egal. Das mit den Tributes ist eben so eine Sache. Manches ist sehr empfehlenswert, anderes dient höchstens als Staubfänger. So sei ein Kauf gründlich überlegt, wobei das Line-Up oftmals Bände spricht, zumindest den ersten Eindruck bestimmt. „December Songs“ bietet somit eine relativ breite Palette und beschränkt sich nicht nur auf den BM-Sektor. Der Fächer reicht von Doom über Gothic, bis hin zu Death, Pagan -und Black Metal. Mannigfaltiges Angebot, gleich bleibende Qualität? Diese Frage stellte ich mir gleich zu Anfang, denn das ist einer der Hauptgründe, warum ich persönlich nicht viel von solchen Tributes halte. Doch anhand der Aufmachung und der liebevollen Gestaltung des Booklets, welches jede mitwirkende Gruppierung ausführlich vorstellt, sollte mir mein Misstrauen noch vergehen.
Dass der Standard wie oben angedeutet überaus hoch liegt, beweisen Foscor im Einstieg mit der 93er Akustiknummer „Midwinter Tales“. Ebenso kommen Beatrik und Xasthur mit akribischer Mühe ihrer Pflicht nach, die melancholischen Schweden ehrenhaft zu vertreten. Insgesamt ist es recht schwer auf der ersten CD irgendwelche Mängel festzustellen, denn auch Wyrd, Geïst und Dark Fortress (man lasse sich das auf der Zunge zergehen) bringen hier vollen Einsatz. Einzig und allein tanzen Forest Stream und die bei NSP gesignten Aeveron aus der Reihe, nicht etwa, weil ihnen ihr Handwerk misslingt, nein, man kommt soundtechnisch einfach zu rumpelig daher, formt folglich einen recht starken Kontrast zu den restlichen Protagonisten.
Auch Disc zwei offenbart hochgradige Schaffenskunst und die Liebe zu dunkler Musik. Für die Amis Loss ist es sicherlich recht ungewohnt mit „Brave“ im Mid-Tempo zu fungieren, spielen sie doch eigentlich reinen Death/ Doom mit ein paar Funeral-Anleihen und Tendenzen zu Necare. Umsetzung und Gestaltung sind dennoch große Klasse, vor allem der klare Gitarrensound hat es mir angetan. Hingegen haben es Forest of Shadows mit dem Tempo schon etwas leichter, denn obwohl man für eine doomige Band wieder recht schnell zu Werke geht (bzw. gehen muss), ist die Musik auf Seiten dieses Ein-Mann-Projekts nach eigener Aussage auch von Katatonia beeinflusst, folglich dürfte es eine Ehre sein, seiner Inspirationsquelle Tribut zu zollen. Persönlich war ich etwas überrascht, dass sogar Hel den Sprung unter die Auserwählten geschafft haben. Meinen Respekt hatten die Deutschen bis jetzt zwar immer, trotzdem war mir ihr Schaffen ein wenig zu schmalzig. Hier zelebrieren sie jedoch wirklich eindrucksvoll das bittere „Cold Ways“, welches einen von Katatonias Umschwüngen darstellt, da man sich 1998 schon eher im depressiven Rock-Bereich bewegte, der dennoch mit Metal-Anteilen gespickt war. Ebenso folgen Farsot und Fragile Hollow diesem Pfad, wobei mir das Cover „Saw You Drown“ von letzt genannter Band die Gänsehaut auf den Rücken treibt, so gefühlvoll ist dieses Stück nachempfunden. Den Abschluss macht das finnische Dark Acoustic-Projekt October Falls. Man zupft bedacht und empfindsam das ruhige „For Funerals to come…“, beendet die hundertminütige Zusammenstellung mit großer Würde.

Fazit: Sehr empfehlenswert!

Review: English Version

The first one isn’t able to abide it, the other one doesn’t want to hear it anymore and the third is indifferent. That with the tributes is even such a thing. Some are very advisable, other serve as dust catcher at most. So a bargain should be deliberated, whereas the line-up often speaks volumes, at least sets the first impression. “December Songs” offers a relative broad palette and doesn’t restrict just on the BM-sector. The blower goes from Doom over Gothic, up to Death, Pagan –and Black Metal. Manifold array, constant quality? This question I asked myself ab initio, because that’s one of the main-reasons, why I personally don’t think much of such tributes. But by hand of the presentation and the affectionate design of the booklet, which introduces every concurring group, my mistrust should die away.
That the standard lies like above indicated acutely high, Foscor prove with the 93er acoustic-number “Midwinter Tales” at the entrance. Just as well Beatrik and Xasthur follow their duty to represent the melancholic swedes with meticulous labour. Altogether it’s difficult to assert any shortcomings, because also Wyrd, Geist and Dark Fortress (yes, that melts in your mouth, right?) show full adoption. Solely Forest Stream and the at NSP signed Aeveron break ranks, not because their handcraft fails, no, sound-technical they come along too lumbering, consequently a quite strong contrast to the rest of the protagonists is formed.
Also disc two bares high-grade legislating-art and the love to dark music. For the americans Loss it’s surely uncommon to operate in Mid-Tempo with „Brave“ – normally they play pure Death/ Doom with a few Funeral-impacts and tendency to Necare. But anyway, conversion and embodiment are a humdinger, first of all the clear guitar-sound has taken me. On the other hand Forest of Shadows got it more easier concerning the tempo, because although the kind of playing is afresh quite fast for a doomy band, the music for parts of the one-man-project is inspired by Katatonia too and hence it might be a honour to pay tribute to his inspiration-source. Personally I was a little bit surprised, that even Hel achieved the jump among the chose ones. Indeed they always got my respect, but despite they were too drippy for me. However here they celebrate really impressive the bitter “Cold Ways”, which displays one of Katatonias changes, because in 1998 one rather moved around inside the Depressive-Rock-Area, which was still larded with Metal-elements. Just as well Farsot and Fragile Hollow follow this path, whereas the cover “Saw You Drown” of the last mentioned band drives me the gooseflesh down my neck, so sentimental this piece was sympathised. The end is formed by the finnish Dark Acoustic-Project October Falls. One picks intent and sensitive the calm “For Funerals to come…”, finishes the hundred-minute compilation with grandeur.

Conclusion: Very recommendable!
