Review: German Version

Manchmal bedarf es keines komplexen Konzeptes, selbstverliebten Gitarren-Rumgewichses oder "bösen" Images, um Aufmerksamkeit zu erhaschen. Nein, es reicht heutzutage vollkommen aus, sich durch geschmackvoll gestaltete, klirrend kalte Hymnen einen Namen zu machen, ohne den üblichen Klischees Raum zu gewährleisten. Lorn - eine Band aus dem italienischen Bozen - verzichten auf große Posen, können selbstredend dafür umso mehr mit ihrer Musik überzeugen.
Oberflächlich betrachtet fahren Lorn ein ziemlich schwedisches Brett, lassen jedoch die Blastbeats und die stechenden Schreie der meisten Vokalisten außen vor. Stattdessen befinden sich die Italiener vorüberwiegend in Mid-Tempo-Sphären, teils geht es etwas flotter zu, wirklich rasant wird es jedoch nie - Dynamik und Epik sind eben wichtiger als pure Geschwindigkeit. Am Beispiel "Trolls. Hordes. Axes.", das als eines der vielseitigsten Lieder auf dieser Platte vertreten ist, sieht beziehungsweise hört man, wie wunderbar die verschiedensten Rhythmen und Ideen zu einer Einheit verschmelzen können - hypnotische Bridges gehen Hand in Hand mit dem atemberaubend tighten Hauptteil und den vielen, kleinen Einsprengsel, die hier und da mal aufflackern. Doch gehen die Ideen von Band-Kopf Radok nicht nur in abwechslungsreichen, sondern auch in relativ eingängigen, majestätisch-erhabenen Stücken der Marke "Through Artery Of Ice" auf. Was hier an dunklen, überirdischen Sequenzen vorkommt, kann mit bloßen Worten kaum beschrieben werden, von solch monumentaler, zeitloser Natur sind jene. Das anschließende Instrumental beweist, mit welch einfachen, aber bei weitem nicht ausgelutschten Mitteln man einen Schneefall beschreiben kann. Einzig das Titel- sowie letzte Stück wollen nicht so richtig in dieses Bild passen, da sie zum einen ein klein wenig zu kurz sind, um eine ähnliche Atmosphäre wie die erwähnten Songs aufzubauen, zum anderen sind sie um Eckhäuser aggressiver, würden also im Endeffekt vielleicht auf einer der nächsten Alben, die die tobsüchtige Seite der Gruppe beleuchtet, ganz gut passen, nicht aber auf "Towards The Abyss of Disease".

Fazit: Starker Einstand, der viel für die Zukunft verspricht!

Damals von mir noch mit mageren siebeneinhalb abgestempelt, wuchs dieses Album mit der Zeit immer mehr und konnte mir letztendlich eine würdige Punktzahl entlocken. Der Titel hält was er verspricht! (8.5/10)

 

Review: English Version

Sometimes, it isn't necessary to come up with complex concepts, narcistic guitar-wankery or an "evil" image to get some attention. No, nowadays, it's totally sufficient when you make a name for yourself by releasing tastefully designed, freezing cold hymns without using the typical clichés. Lorn - a band from Bolzano, Italy - do without big posing but first and foremost convince with their music of course.
When looking at it superficially, Lorn have something Swedish going on but they factor out the blastbeats and high-pitched screams of most vocalists. Instead, the Italians reside in Mid-Tempo-spheres, at times they play a little bit faster but it doesn't get really racy here - dynamic and epic music are just more important than pure speed. One easily can hear in "Trolls. Hordes. Axes" (that is represented here as one of the most diversifying tracks) how wonderful the most different rhythms and ideas are melting together to form a unit - hypnotic bridges go hand in hand with the breath-takingly tight main-part and those many, little dots that come up once in a while. But not only do the ideas of band-head Radok succeed within varied, but also within catchy, majestic-exalted tracks like "Through Artery of Ice". It's impossible to describe with words how dark, extraterrestrial, monumental and timeless these riffs are that appear here. The following instrumental proves that snowfall can be described in an audiovisual simple but by-no-means overused riffs. Only the title- and the last track won't fit into that picture because on one hand, they are a little bit too short to build the same atmosphere as the other mentioned tracks do and the on the other hand they are way more aggressive and would maybe fit on one of the next records [of Lorn] which show the vicious side of the band.

Conclusion: Great debut that makes me want to look into Lorn's future!

Some time ago by me nor postmarked with meagre seven and a half, but with the course of time this album grew more and more and finally wormed a worthy score out of me. The title beholds what it promises! (8.5/10)
